Pune Sinkhole Incident Swallows Truck and Motorbike at City Post Office

A sinkhole emerged on Friday afternoon at the City Post Office premises, causing a sanitation department truck and a motorbike to fall in. The incident occurred around 4 pm in the parking area near Laxmi Road, Budhwar Peth. It took two large cranes four hours to retrieve the vehicles. A senior official suggested that an old well might have existed beneath the paved surface.

Videos captured the moment when the truck, used for cleaning drainage lines, slid into the pit rear-first as the interlocking cement blocks gave way. A nearby parked motorbike also fell into the hole. Fortunately, the truck's driver was unharmed, according to a fire brigade official.

Possible Cause of Sinkhole

Municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale noted that the post office building is over a century old. The circular shape of the pit suggests a well-like structure might be underneath. Despite ongoing Pune Metro construction nearby, Maha Metro officials clarified that their work is unrelated to the sinkhole, as it occurs over 65 feet below rock strata.

The densely populated Budhwar Peth locality witnessed this unexpected event, raising concerns about infrastructure safety. The incident highlights potential risks associated with ageing urban structures and underlying geological features. Authorities are likely to investigate further to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
