Fadnavis Confirms No Pressure on Pune Police in Fatal Car Crash Investigation
In a recent development concerning the tragic car crash in Pune, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has clarified that there has been no negligence on the part of the police in handling the investigation. The incident, which resulted in the death of two software engineers, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for stricter regulations on pub operating hours.

The accident, involving a Porsche car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old under the influence of alcohol, occurred in Kalyani Nagar, Pune. The teenager's father, a prominent builder, along with four individuals associated with two pubs that served alcohol to the minor, have been apprehended by the police.
Addressing the media after a surprise visit to the Pune Police commissionerate, Fadnavis stated that there has been no pressure on the police force regarding this case. He also mentioned that an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) has been tasked with reviewing CCTV footage from the police station to ensure no external influence or assistance was provided to the juvenile post-detention.
On the topic of pub closing times, currently set at 1.30 am, Fadnavis revealed he has requested a report from the police department to consider adjusting this to 11 pm. This comes amid growing concerns over underage drinking and the enforcement of age verification by liquor-serving establishments.
The Deputy Chief Minister also touched upon the issue of the Porsche's registration. The vehicle, bought in Bengaluru and brought to Pune, was inspected by the Pune RTO. However, it was found that road tax had not been paid. Fadnavis assured that if any violations were discovered, separate legal action would be initiated.
Furthermore, Fadnavis emphasized the seriousness with which the police are treating this case, indicating that efforts to secure bail for individuals responsible for fatal accidents would not be tolerated. This statement follows after the juvenile involved in the crash was granted bail shortly after his detention.
In response to concerns about pubs and restaurants not adequately checking patrons' ages, Fadnavis has instructed both the excise department and municipal corporations to ensure compliance with licensing conditions.
The incident also prompted Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut to call for the removal of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Raut criticized the police for allegedly providing a misleading report on the incident and questioned whom they were trying to protect. He highlighted that two innocent lives were lost and pointed out footage showing the minor consuming alcohol in a pub prior to the accident.
This tragic event has ignited a debate on road safety, underage drinking, and regulatory enforcement in Pune, with authorities now taking steps to address these concerns head-on.
