Pune Police Appoint Special Counsel in Gangrape Case of 21-Year-Old Woman

Pune police have announced the appointment of a special counsel for the investigation into the gangrape of a 21-year-old woman on October 3 at Bopdev Ghat. Two of the three suspects have been apprehended. The police aim to expedite the investigation, file charges promptly, and fast-track the trial for swift justice, according to Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar.

The first suspect was arrested on October 11. During questioning, it was discovered that one suspect had relocated from Nagpur to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. This led to search operations in Prayagraj and Varanasi, with assistance from the UP Special Task Force. The second arrest occurred on Monday morning, and efforts continue to capture the third suspect involved in the crime, Kumar stated.

Efforts to Apprehend Remaining Suspect

Authorities are actively pursuing the third individual linked to the crime. The police are determined to bring all perpetrators to justice swiftly. The special counsel's appointment is part of this strategy, aiming to ensure a thorough and efficient legal process.

In a separate matter, Commissioner Kumar addressed questions regarding the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique on October 12 in Mumbai's Bandra area. He mentioned that it would be inappropriate to comment on an ongoing investigation handled by Mumbai police. However, Pune police are investigating any potential connections between local individuals and the gang involved in Siddique's murder.

The proposal for appointing a special counsel has been submitted to the Maharashtra government. This step underscores the seriousness with which Pune police are treating this case. Their goal is not only to secure convictions but also to restore public confidence in law enforcement's ability to handle such grave offenses effectively.
