Pune Engineering College Rusticates Student Over Pro-Pakistan Instagram Story
Sinhgad Institute of Technology in Kondhwa, Pune has rusticated a 19-year-old second-year engineering student, Khadija Sheikh, following outrage over her alleged pro-Pakistan posts on social media.
According to reports, Khadija, an Information Technology (IT) student, shared multiple Instagram stories with slogans such as "Pakistan Zindabad" and images perceived to support Pakistan. The issue gained traction after screenshots of her posts surfaced online, sparking criticism from several users and political commentators, who questioned whether such behaviour was acceptable in Indian academic institutions.
The student had also reportedly visited Kashmir last week, further intensifying the controversy.
As the online backlash mounted, several users tagged the Pune Police and Sinhgad College, demanding action. Some even called for Khadija to be booked under stringent laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), IPC Section 124A (sedition), and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
In response, the college administration acted swiftly. In a formal statement issued on Saturday, officials confirmed that the student had been rusticated pending further investigation. "Sinhgad College maintains a strict code of conduct and upholds national values. We do not endorse or tolerate any anti-national activities. Appropriate disciplinary measures have been taken," the statement said.
The accused, identified as Khadija Shahabuddin Sheikh, a resident of Kausarbag in Kondhwa and a second-year IT engineering student at Sinhgad Academy of Engineering, Kondhwa Budruk, has been taken into custody.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Rajkumar Shinde confirmed the arrest, stating, "She has been booked under Sections 152, 196, 197, 299, 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) based on the complaint received. Further investigation is underway."
While police have not officially disclosed the motive behind her controversial Instagram story, authorities suggest that the content had the potential to incite unrest or disturb public order, especially amid the current sensitive situation triggered by recent cross-border tensions. Her Instagram account has since been deleted.
Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
