Man Receives Death Sentence in Pune for Rape and Murder of Minor Girl
In a significant ruling on Friday, a special court in Pune delivered a verdict in a harrowing case involving the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl that occurred in 2022. The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge B.P. Kshirsagar of the special POCSO court, found 28-year-old Tejas Dalvi guilty and sentenced him to death. This decision was made after considering the gravity of the crime, categorizing it as fitting the 'rarest of the rare' criteria. The convict's mother, aged 48, was also implicated in the case for her role in destroying evidence and received a sentence of seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI).

The tragic incident unfolded on August 2, 2022, when the minor was abducted from the courtyard of her home located in a village under Maval tehsil of Pune district. The following day, her body was discovered bearing signs of sexual assault and severe throat injuries. The investigation led to Tejas Dalvi as the prime suspect. Further inquiries revealed that Dalvi had kidnapped the girl, taken her to his residence, sexually assaulted her, and then murdered her by slitting her throat. To conceal his heinous act, Dalvi disposed of the girl's body in a pit behind his house with his mother's assistance in eradicating any evidence linked to their atrocious crime.
Following their arrest, both accused were charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Throughout the trial, Special Public Prosecutor Rajesh Kavediya presented testimonies from 29 witnesses which played a crucial role in establishing the guilt of the mother-son duo.
The court's decision to impose the death penalty on Dalvi underscores the severity with which it viewed the crime, emphasizing that such brutal acts against minors will not be tolerated and perpetrators will face the utmost penalty under law. The sentencing of Dalvi's mother to seven years RI further highlights the legal repercussions for those who aid in covering up such crimes.
This case has once again brought to light the critical importance of safeguarding children against sexual offences and ensuring swift justice for victims and their families. The rigorous legal proceedings and the eventual verdict serve as a stern reminder of the consequences awaiting those who commit such vile acts.
