Protests Erupt in Mathura Over Discovery of Cow Carcasses Causing Major Traffic Disruption
On Friday, a significant protest erupted on Mathura-Vrindavan Road, where hundreds gathered to block traffic. This disruption followed the discovery of over three dozen cow carcasses in a forested area near PMV Polytechnic College. The roadblock caused major inconvenience to residents, schoolchildren, and pilgrims, resulting in severe traffic congestion.

Despite police efforts to disperse the crowd, protesters remained steadfast, leading to the use of mild force to clear the road. District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh confirmed the incident and stated that the cow remains were found near Dhauhera village behind the PMV campus. Authorities suspect that cattle owners or nearby gaushalas might have discarded them.
Protesters Demand Action Against Illegal Activities
Bharat Gautam, district president of the Gau Raksha Samiti, accused authorities of negligence. He claimed illegal cow slaughter and unethical trade are rampant due to lax enforcement by police and administrative officials. Gautam alleged some gaushala operators were dumping carcasses after removing cowhide, which he deemed unacceptable.
The protesters demanded strict action against those responsible and accused authorities of ignoring the issue. The situation escalated, prompting intervention from District Magistrate Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Shailesh Kumar Pandey. DM Singh noted that such disruptions cause chaos, especially with the heavy influx of pilgrims during weekends.
Authorities Respond to Protesters' Concerns
In response to the protest, municipal authorities were instructed to remove the cow carcasses respectfully. The administration assured protesters that an investigation into gaushalas in the area would be conducted. Despite attempts to reason with the crowd, officials had to resort to force when protesters refused to clear the road.
Police detained four individuals for blocking the road and causing a public disturbance. However, no formal case had been registered by late Friday night. The authorities emphasised their commitment to investigating and taking strict action against those found guilty of illegal activities related to cow slaughter.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region regarding cow protection and illegal activities. As investigations continue, local authorities face pressure to address these concerns effectively while maintaining public order.
