Amethi: Polling pitch gets slippery with Priyanka's 'tears'

Amethi, April 26: Priyanka's discourse with the people of Amethi today was more of an emotional exchange. As she linked herself and the Gandhi legacy in the land, she did not forget her goals-to campaign for the last hope of Congress.

A Congress Fortress, the area is the sure-shot winning seat for the party. Hailing her father's contribution toward the nation and criticizing the 'people' who discouraged him to bring the computer revolution in the country, Priyanka pitched for the emotional connection that the Gandhi family has for Amethi.

"We are here because you love us. Otherwise we are nothing without you. I remember coming down to Amethi with my father when I was a child and I know how much he loved you. Immediately after his death in 1999, I came here so that I could fulfil his dreams of seeing you progress. And I worked day and night to do that. I was shifted to Rae Bareli then and I cried on my last day here. You may choose anyone, but the emotional connect will always be there," she said.

In a direct attack at Smriti Irani, she said," It is easy to criticise, but who has a better understanding of you than us. The one who unsuccessfully fought the 2004 elections from Chandni Chowk, has never visited you even once. She is fighting the election to pull Rahul Gandhi down and not work for the region."

Following this she ran through the party's agendas and the work done there, saying that Rahul was foresighted and would be working for the region as always has. She cited some of the major projects that have taken place here under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, such as the Megafood, educational institutes, national highways, better airports etc.

It is a matter of time till we see the results and decide whether Amethi has taken a decision with its heart or with head.
