Lokpal Chief Justice A M Khanwilkar Highlights Need for Forensic Experts to Tackle Evolving Corruption Challenges

The anti-corruption ombudsman, Lokpal, is focusing on hiring experts in forensic accounting and cyber investigations. This move aims to tackle the increasingly complex nature of corruption, according to its chairperson, Justice A M Khanwilkar. Speaking at the first Lokpal Day event, he highlighted efforts to incorporate advanced information technology to improve the ombudsman's processes.

Lokpal Chief Calls for Forensic Expert Recruitment

Justice Khanwilkar noted that the challenges facing Lokpal are constantly changing due to evolving corruption models. The growing alliance between politicians, bureaucrats, and business interests necessitates ongoing vigilance and timely interventions. Despite limited resources, Lokpal has been diligently working since its inception to meet its objectives and mission.

Enhancing Efficiency with Technology

Efforts are underway to simplify and make the complaint registration process more transparent. Additionally, integrating cutting-edge information technology is a priority to boost efficiency and effectiveness. The feasibility of artificial intelligence applications is also being explored to enhance data management and analysis capabilities.

Justice Khanwilkar stated that these technological tools will expedite inquiries into misconduct allegations and improve responsiveness to new challenges. The event took place at Zorawar Auditorium, Manekshaw Centre, with notable attendees including Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

Collaboration with Anti-Corruption Agencies

Lokpal is promoting increased collaboration with agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), Chief Vigilance Officers (CVOs), other enforcement bodies, and the judiciary. This united front aims to expose entrenched corruption networks effectively.

"We believe that together we can create a powerful and potent force to expose the entrenched network of corruption," said Khanwilkar. The ombudsman is also enhancing public awareness campaigns nationwide to encourage active public participation in promoting transparency and accountability.

Public Engagement and Awareness

Khanwilkar emphasised the importance of informing the public about their rights and mechanisms for reporting corruption in real-time. "We believe that a society aware of its rights and enjoys ease of access to the institutions meant to protect them is one step closer to creating an environment that will no longer tolerate corruption," he stated.

The event also honoured anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare, Attorney General R Venkatramani, and former Supreme Court judge Justice N Santosh Hegde for their contributions. Hazare joined virtually from his village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district.

In summary, Lokpal is adopting multi-pronged strategies to strengthen its operations. Prioritising recruitment of specialised personnel is key to addressing sophisticated corruption issues. By leveraging technology and fostering collaboration with other agencies, Lokpal aims to create a robust framework against corruption in India.
