At the center of the Yadav family tree was Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of the Samajwadi Party and a three-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He remained one of the most influential leaders in state politics for decades.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had two major family branches that remained in public focus over the years. His political legacy was primarily carried forward by his elder son Akhilesh Yadav, while his younger son Prateek Yadav chose a non-political life.

Aparna Yadav later entered politics and initially joined the Samajwadi Party. She contested the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from Lucknow Cantonment but lost the election.
