Pranab Mukherjee's Daughter Slams Congress Over Manmohan Singh Memorial Controversy

Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, has expressed strong disappointment with the Congress party for its failure to convene a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting following her father's death in 2020.

Speaking out on social media platform X, she criticized the party's apparent disregard for a customary condolence meeting, calling it a lack of respect for her father’s legacy and contributions.

Sharmistha further substantiated her frustration by referencing her father's personal diaries, which noted that a CWC condolence meeting had been convened for the late President KR Narayanan. This, she argued, contradicted the explanation given by a senior Congress leader that such meetings were not held for presidents.

Support for Manmohan Singh Memorial

Despite her criticism, Sharmistha extended her support to the Congress party’s plea for a memorial to honor former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at 92. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging Dr. Singh’s contributions, advocating not only for the memorial but also for conferring upon him the Bharat Ratna, an honor her father had wished to award during his presidency.

Sharmistha underscored the need to recognize Singh's unparalleled legacy as India's first Sikh Prime Minister and his transformative economic reforms, which shaped modern India.

Memorial Controversy Highlights Deeper Issues

The debate over Dr. Singh’s memorial exposed a broader challenge in how India memorializes its political leaders. Congress accused the government of delaying the allocation of a suitable cremation site and memorial space, a move the party labelled as disrespectful. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had earlier announced Singh's last rites at Delhi's Nigam Bodh Ghat with full state honours.

In response, the MHA confirmed late Friday that a memorial site would be allocated following a formal request from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Union Home Minister Amit Shah communicated this decision to Kharge and Singh's family, indicating that the allocation process would commence once an appropriate Trust was established to oversee the memorial.

Legacy of Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, left an indelible mark on the nation. Known for his pivotal role in liberalizing India’s economy, Singh’s tenure elevated millions from poverty and strengthened India’s global standing. His life and contributions continue to inspire debates about how the nation remembers and honors its trailblazing leaders.

As preparations for Singh’s final rites were underway, this development underscored the complexities of political recognition in India and the processes involved in memorializing its distinguished figures.
