Political Leaders Express Condolences Following the Death of Veteran Akali Leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa
Political figures from various parties expressed their condolences on Wednesday for the passing of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, a veteran Akali leader and former Union minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a "towering statesman" with immense wisdom and dedication to public service. Dhindsa passed away at 89 due to age-related health issues in a Mohali hospital.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann shared his sorrow over the loss of the senior Akali leader, recognising his tireless work for the people's welfare. He extended his sympathies to Dhindsa's family, praying for peace for the departed soul and strength for the family to endure this significant loss.
Tributes from Political Leaders
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed deep sadness over Dhindsa's demise. In a post on X, he highlighted Dhindsa's long service to Punjab and the community as part of the SAD, stating that his contributions will always be remembered. Former CM Capt Amarinder Singh also conveyed his condolences, describing Dhindsa as a dignified leader who served Punjab with integrity.
Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly, called Dhindsa a towering figure in Punjab politics. Bajwa noted that Dhindsa dedicated over six decades to public service, leaving a legacy remembered with respect. "May he rest in peace," Bajwa posted on X.
Legacy and Contributions
Prime Minister Modi remarked that Dhindsa's death is a significant loss for the nation. He praised Dhindsa's grassroots connection with Punjab and his efforts towards rural development, social justice, and strengthening social fabric. Modi emphasised that Dhindsa championed these causes throughout his life.
Former Punjab minister Manpreet Singh Badal also mourned Dhindsa's passing, describing him as a grassroots leader who held Punjab close to his heart. Manpreet Badal shared that he began his political journey under Dhindsa's guidance and continues to be inspired by his quiet wisdom and commitment.
Political Career Highlights
Dhindsa served as Shiromani Akali Dal Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur in 2004 and was Union minister of sports, chemicals, and fertilizers under Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government. He was also a Rajya Sabha MP from 1998 to 2004 and again from 2010 to 2022.
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring acknowledged Dhindsa's immense contributions to state and national politics. Warring noted that Dhindsa was among the last great icons of Punjab who witnessed its eventful history. He stated that filling the void left by Dhindsa's demise would be challenging.
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh described Dhindsa as a visionary leader and experienced parliamentarian dedicated to public service. Chugh highlighted Dhindsa's life-long commitment to serving others.
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa is survived by his wife, son, and two daughters. His legacy continues through his family and the many lives he touched during his extensive political career.
