Police vehicle carrying Atiq Ahmed almost turns turtle, hits cow

A vehicle with the convoy of the police shifting gangster Atiq Ahmed to Uttar Pradesh narrowly escaped overturning as it hit a cow as it passed through the Shivpuri area in Uttar Pradesh.

The convoy was en route to Prayagraj from Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad when the incident took place.

Report said that the cow died on the spot following the accident.

The convoy with Atiq Ahmed was passing through the Kharai checkpoint in Shivpuri, when a cow suddenly came in front. The collision was so intense that the cow died on the spot. The van almost flipped, following which the entire convoy paused for a short period of time before it proceeded to Prayagraj.

The incident took place just a while after the convoy had stopped for a break.

Ahmed had remarked prior to undertaking the 1,200 kilometre journey in a police van that he was concerned about being killed by the UP police team in an encounter.

"I know their programme, they want to murder me," he had said.

Netizens were however amused and shared memes about a possible encounter of the gangster at the hands of the Uttar Pradesh police. Given that gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in a police encounter, after he had tried to escape police custody, social media users joked that the deceased has been waiting in anticipation of Atiq Ahmed in heaven.

Responding to the UP police's car turning turtle DGP Devendra Singh Chauhan said, "our cars don't turn turtle, the accused do. Ahmed will be produced before the court in the 2006 case."
Atiq Ahmed is expected to also be questioned in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Phulpur was lodged in the Sabarmati central jail since June 2019. He was shifted there from his home state on the directions of the Supreme Court.

In April 2019, the Supreme Court had directed that Atiq Ahmed to be shifted to the high-security jail in Gujarat after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnap and assault of a real estate businessman, Mohit Jaiswal. He is named in over 100 cases, including the recent Umesh Pal murder case, the police said.
