Police Arrest 15 Individuals Following Communal Violence in Pune's Yavat Village

Fifteen individuals have been arrested in Yavat village, Pune, after communal violence erupted over a controversial social media post. Five FIRs have been filed against over 500 people involved in the unrest.

Authorities have detained 15 individuals following the registration of five FIRs linked to communal unrest in Yavat village, Pune district. The violence erupted due to an objectionable status posted on a social messaging platform. The youth responsible for the post has also been apprehended, according to officials. Senior Inspector Narayan Deshmukh from Yavat police station confirmed the arrests and stated that those detained are in police custody until August 6.

Communal tensions flared up in Yavat village, Daund tehsil, on Friday afternoon. Groups angered by the social media post engaged in vandalism and arson. Several properties were damaged or set on fire. "We have registered five cases related to the violence," an official from Yavat police station reported. Four cases involve over 500 people accused of arson and property damage, with more than 100 individuals identified so far.

Police Response and Security Measures

The mob targeted a motorcycle, two cars, a religious structure, and a bakery during the unrest. To disperse the crowd, police used tear gas and lathi-charge. Prohibitory orders have been issued in Yavat, and the situation is now under control, according to officials. Superintendent of Police Pune Rural Sandeep Singh Gill mentioned that initial investigations do not indicate a planned conspiracy.

Gill added that conclusions will be drawn after a thorough inquiry. By Saturday afternoon, five FIRs had been filed concerning the incident. The individual whose post incited the violence has lived in the village for years. After the outbreak of violence, police acted swiftly to restore order. A significant number of security personnel, including State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), have been deployed in the area.

Community Reactions and Political Visits

Prohibitory orders under Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita section 163 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 144 were imposed from Friday night and will remain until further assessment. Additional SP Ganesh Biradar stated that social media platforms are being monitored closely, with drones being used for surveillance in villages.

BJP MLA Rahul Kul visited the affected village on Friday night. He met with Special Inspector General Sunil Phulari and other senior officers. Kul attributed the unrest to a few individuals and denied any political motives behind the clashes. A villager commented that there is no current tension and peace prevails.

Statements from Government Officials

During his visit to Pune on Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the situation. He explained that a youth from another area posted an objectionable status about a Hindu priest involved in a rape case, which angered residents. "Strict action will be taken against those who post objectionable content," Fadnavis stated.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also visited Yavat on Friday. He revealed that the youth who allegedly uploaded the WhatsApp post is from Nanded and works as a daily wage labourer. The post related to an incident in Madhya Pradesh, leading locals to resort to vandalism.

Background of Tensions

Tensions have been simmering in Yavat for about a week before this incident. On July 26, a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was reportedly desecrated by a non-native person. Following this, Yavat gram panchayat passed a resolution to identify outsiders settled in the village for appropriate action.

The situation in Yavat is now stable with efforts ongoing to defuse tensions between communities. Both communities are working together towards peace, as noted by local authorities.
