Jammu and Kashmir Paves the Way for Craftsman Empowerment with PM Vishwakarma Yojana
Jammu and Kashmir takes a pioneering step in implementing the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, becoming the first Union Territory to empower craftsmen and promote self-employment. The initiative aims to enhance the skills of the craftsman community, with the first batch of 30 trainees receiving training in darzi craft.
In a groundbreaking move, Jammu and Kashmir has become the first Union Territory (UT) in India to implement the prestigious PM Vishwakarma Yojana (PMVY). This initiative, launched by the Central government in September 2023, aims to empower and enhance the skills of the craftsman community, fostering self-employment and economic growth.

Inauguration of Training Program
The inauguration of the training program for the first batch of 30 trainees (Viswakarmas) in darzi craft was conducted virtually on Tuesday. Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, and Secretary of the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Atul Kumar Tiwari, graced the event at ITI Shopian.
Promoting Skill Development and Employment
Advisor Bhatnagar expressed immense pride in Jammu and Kashmir being the first UT to implement the PMVY scheme. He emphasized the administration's unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of skill development, thereby creating ample employment opportunities for the youth. The scheme is poised to be operationalized in all districts of Jammu and Kashmir in the near future.
Key Features of PMVY
The PMVY initiative encompasses various components to support and uplift the craftsman community. It includes basic training of five to seven days, followed by advanced training of 15 days or more. Trainees receive a daily stipend of Rs 500, and upon completion, they are provided with a free modern toolkit worth Rs 15,000. Additionally, the yojana offers linkage with credit-based soft loans and marketing support to assist artisans in expanding their businesses.
Recognition and Empowerment
Through the PMVY, artisans and craftspeople are recognized and honored with PM Vishwakarma certificates and ID cards. This recognition serves as a testament to their skills and expertise, enhancing their credibility and marketability. The scheme empowers them to embrace self-employment, contribute to the local economy, and preserve traditional craftsmanship.
Jammu and Kashmir's pioneering implementation of the PM Vishwakarma Yojana marks a significant milestone in the upliftment of the craftsman community. By providing comprehensive training, financial support, and market linkages, the scheme empowers artisans to thrive and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region. The success of this initiative in Jammu and Kashmir sets an inspiring example for other states and UTs to follow, fostering a culture of skill development and entrepreneurship across the nation.
