PM-Surya Ghar Yojana: A Game-Changer for Sustainable Energy in India
The PM-Surya Ghar Yojana is a revolutionary scheme that aims to bring sustainable energy solutions to every home in India. By providing subsidies for installing rooftop solar plants and offering up to 300 units of free electricity, this initiative promises to light up lives without burdening pockets, ensuring a brighter, greener future for the nation.
In a significant move towards promoting sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions, the Indian government has approved the PM-Surya Ghar: Mufti Bijli Yojna, a rooftop solar scheme with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore. This ambitious initiative aims to provide up to Rs 78,000 in subsidy for the installation of solar plants and offer 300 units of free power to one crore households across the country.

Key Features of the Scheme
The PM-Surya Ghar: Mufti Bijli Yojna offers several key features that make it an attractive proposition for households looking to adopt solar energy:
- Subsidy for Solar Plant Installation: The scheme provides a central financial assistance (CFA) of 60% of the system cost for 2 kW systems and 40% of the additional system cost for systems between 2 kW to 3 kW capacity. This means a subsidy of Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for a 2 kW system, and Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW system or higher.
- Free Electricity: Households participating in the scheme will receive 300 units of free electricity every month for a period of 25 years. This can significantly reduce their electricity bills and promote energy savings.
- Collateral-Free Loans: Households can avail collateral-free low-interest loans of around 7% for installing residential rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW. This makes it easier for households to finance the installation of solar panels.
- Model Solar Villages: The scheme envisions the development of a Model Solar Village in each district to serve as a role model for the adoption of rooftop solar in rural areas.
- Incentives for Urban Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions: Urban Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions will receive incentives for promoting rooftop solar installations in their respective areas.
- Payment Security for RESCO Models: The scheme includes a component for payment security for renewable energy service company (RESCO) based models, ensuring that households can rely on a steady stream of income from surplus power generation.
- Fund for Innovative Projects: A dedicated fund has been allocated for innovative projects in rooftop solar technology, encouraging research and development in this field.
Benefits of the Scheme
The PM-Surya Ghar: Mufti Bijli Yojna offers numerous benefits to households, the environment, and the nation as a whole:
- Reduced Electricity Bills: Households can save significantly on their electricity bills by generating their own solar power.
- Additional Income: Households can earn additional income by selling surplus power generated by their solar systems to DISCOMs.
- Reduced Carbon Emissions: The scheme is expected to reduce 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over the 25-year lifetime of rooftop systems, contributing to India's climate change mitigation efforts.
- Job Creation: The scheme is estimated to create around 17 lakh direct jobs in various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales, installation, and maintenance.
The PM-Surya Ghar: Mufti Bijli Yojna is a bold and transformative initiative that has the potential to revolutionize the way households consume and generate energy. By providing substantial subsidies, free electricity, and other incentives, the scheme encourages widespread adoption of rooftop solar systems, leading to significant environmental and economic benefits for the nation. As India strives towards a sustainable and greener future, the PM-Surya Ghar: Mufti Bijli Yojna stands as a beacon of hope, empowering households to harness the power of the sun and secure a brighter, more prosperous tomorrow.
