PM Modi's ₹5 Lakh Health Coverage For Seniors: How To Apply? Check Eligibility And Process
In a significant step towards ensuring healthcare access for senior citizens, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch a special health coverage scheme today, October 29, 2024, under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
This initiative focuses on providing health coverage for all Indian citizens aged 70 and above, aiming to benefit an estimated six crore senior citizens from around 4.5 crore households across the country.

PM Health Coverage For Seniors: guide on how to apply, eligibility criteria, and the benefits this scheme offers:
Key Features of the AB-PMJAY Senior Citizens Healthcare Scheme
Eligibility:
- All Indian citizens aged 70 years and above as per their Aadhaar card can avail of this healthcare scheme, irrespective of their income status.
- This makes it a universal offering for senior citizens without the need for any means testing or income verification.
Health Coverage Benefits:
- Eligible individuals can receive free treatment up to ₹5 lakh annually at any of the empanelled hospitals under the AB-PMJAY scheme.
- The coverage will be available from October 29, 2024, onwards.
Application Process:
- Senior citizens need to register on the PMJAY portal or through the Ayushman Bharat app.
- Even if you already hold an Ayushman card, you will have to reapply and complete your eKYC to obtain a new card specifically for this scheme.
Additional Coverage:
Senior citizens aged 70 and above, who are part of families already covered under AB-PMJAY, will receive an additional top-up cover of ₹5 lakh per year, which is exclusive to them. This amount is separate and will not be shared with other family members under the same scheme.
Widespread Reach:
The scheme will be available in 33 states and Union Territories, excluding Delhi, Odisha, and West Bengal, where implementation is yet to take place.
Private Insurance and ESIC:
If a senior citizen is already availing of private health insurance or covered under the Employees' State Insurance Scheme (ESIC), they are still eligible to benefit from this scheme. This allows for dual coverage under both private and public insurance policies.
Public Health Insurance Schemes:
Senior citizens covered under public schemes like the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or the Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) will need to choose between continuing with their current scheme or opting for coverage under the AB-PMJAY scheme.
Benefits to Date:
- The AB-PMJAY scheme has already covered 7.37 crore hospital admissions, with around 49% of the beneficiaries being women.
- The public has received health benefits worth over ₹1 lakh crore under this scheme, as stated by the health ministry.
Empanelled Hospitals:
As of September 1, 2024, a total of 29,648 hospitals have been empanelled to provide treatment under the AB-PMJAY scheme. This includes 12,696 private hospitals, ensuring access to both public and private healthcare services.
