PM Modi Slams Congress, Says Grand Old Party Killed Indian Democracy, Underlines 'Emergency'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi came out all guns blazing at the Congress during the debate on Constitution. PM said Congress' erstwhile government killed the soul of the Constitution by imposing 'Emergency'.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, out of 75 years of Independence, Congress ruled for 55 years. "The Congress family left no stone unturned to hurt the Constitution," he added.

PM Modi said that first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru didn't hesitate in making changes in the holy Constitution just for their own benefit. He added that Nehru tasted blood.

"One Congress family changed Constitution to attack freedom of expression, it was insult to founders of Constitution," PM Modi said.

Later, Indira Gandhi did the same, when the Apex court canceled her election, she imposed an emergency in the country by misusing her powers.

Indira Gandhi imposed an Emergency on this Country and snatched the basic rights of the people. Courts were closed for people, all leaders were arrested and no one was even allowed to say a word against her Government. This was murder of Democracy, murder of the Constitution.

"The Emergency was declared not to save the country, but to save their own chair," PM further said.

Former PM Rajiv Gandhi also displayed the misuse of power as he overturned the Supreme Court's decision in the Shah Bano case. Rajiv Gandhi disrespected the Supreme Court, Apex constitutionl body.

"It was started by Nehru, Indira took it forward and Rajiv Gandhi was doing the same. The next generation is doing the same thing," PM Modi said.

Quoting former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's writings, PM Modi said Congress' leadership controlled the power, and the government remains answerable to the party.
