PM Modi’s Visit To CJI Chandrachud’s Home Sparks Opposition Concerns
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's residence for Ganpati Puja has ignited a heated debate among political leaders and legal experts.
The visit, which saw Modi, donned in a traditional Maharashtrian cap, join CJI Chandrachud and his wife for aarti and prayers before Lord Ganesha's idol, has raised questions about the impact on judicial impartiality, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Concerns About Judicial Impartiality
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has voiced concerns that such interactions between political leaders and top judicial officials could erode public trust in the judiciary. Sanjay Raut, a prominent Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, argued that the visit could be seen as compromising the neutrality of the judiciary, especially in light of ongoing cases involving the Maharashtra government that are currently before CJI Chandrachud. Raut has called for the Chief Justice to recuse himself from these cases to prevent any perception of bias.
"The Prime Minister's visit to the Chief Justice's residence and their joint participation in aarti raises serious concerns. With the CJI presiding over a case involving the current Maharashtra government, it is crucial that he considers recusing himself to ensure fairness and impartiality," Raut stated.
Calls for Caution and Accountability
Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also weighed in, expressing hopes that the Chief Justice would resume focus on the critical hearings related to Maharashtra's political situation after the festive season. Chaturvedi's post on X hinted at the possibility of delays in judicial proceedings due to the political context.
"Hopefully, after the festivities, the Chief Justice will be able to prioritize concluding the hearing on the Maharashtra case. With elections on the horizon, there's a risk of further adjournments," Chaturvedi wrote.
Criticism from Legal Experts
Legal experts have also expressed concern over the implications of the visit. Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan criticized the meeting as a troubling signal about the judiciary's independence. Bhushan emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear separation between the executive and judicial branches to uphold the integrity of the judicial system.
"It is shocking that the Chief Justice allowed Modi to visit him at his residence. Such actions undermine the judiciary's role in safeguarding citizens' rights and ensuring government accountability. There must be a strict separation between the executive and judiciary," Bhushan commented on X.
Activist and lawyer Indira Jai Singh echoed these concerns, accusing CJI Chandrachud of compromising the separation of powers. Singh called for the Supreme Court Bar Association to publicly address and condemn what she perceives as a breach of judicial independence.
"The Chief Justice's actions have compromised the separation of powers between the Executive and the Judiciary. There's a loss of confidence in the CJI's independence, and this needs to be condemned by the SCBA," Singh wrote.
