PM Modi opposes 100% salary hike for MPs: Here is why

New Delhi, May 3: Members of Parliament (MPs) who are awaiting for the nod from PMO for a pay hike in their salary, may have to wait bit long as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reportedly against the lawmakers' decision by own for a 100% hike.

The MPs have recommended a cent per cent hike in their salaries and allowances which is now awaiting PMO's nod.

PM opposes 100% salary hike for MPs

A parliamentary committee has suggested that the MPs' salaries be raised from Rs 50,000 a month to a lakh and the constituency allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000. The Centre needs to spend more than Rs250 crore annually if the salary hike recommendation gets PMO's nod.

PM has supported linking salary hikes for MPs with increments for people holding other posts, like the President and Vice-President or Cabinet Secretary.

The panel headed by BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, also recommended a 75 per cent rise in pensions and an automatic periodic revision of salaries. The last time the MPs' salaries were hiked six years ago.

The panel has also recommended to double doubling the constituency allowance and secretarial assistance allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000 per month.
