Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over loss of lives due to a powerful earthquake off Indonesia's northern Aceh province.

New Delhi, Dec 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over loss of lives due to a powerful earthquake off Indonesia's northern Aceh province.

The magnitude 6.5 quake struck just off the north-east coast of Sumatra island, where dozens of buildings have collapsed and many people are feared trapped under rubble.

The quake's epicentre was 19 kilometres southeast of the town of Sigli in Aceh province.

According to reports, 97 people have been killed.
