PM Modi Mourns The Passing Of CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury At 72

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the death of Sitaram Yechury, a distinguished Left leader and skilled parliamentarian, who died at 72. Modi described Yechury as a significant figure in the Left movement and praised his ability to engage across political lines.

"Saddened by the passing away of Shri Sitaram Yechury Ji. He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum," PM Modi said in an X post.

Yechury's Political Journey

Sitaram Yechury, who led the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) three times, passed away on Thursday at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after battling a prolonged illness. He was 72 years old. Modi also noted Yechury's impact as an "effective parliamentarian" and extended his condolences to Yechury's family and supporters, saying, "My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti."

Yechury succeeded Prakash Karat as CPI(M) leader in April 2015. Unlike Karat, who was known for his hardline approach, Yechury excelled in coalition politics, much like his mentor Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Surjeet played a pivotal role in the National Front and United Front coalition governments, while Yechury was instrumental during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) years from 2004 to 2014.

Personal Life and Education

Born in Chennai, Sitaram Yechury pursued his education at Delhi's St. Stephen's College and Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was closely associated with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, especially during Manmohan Singh's tenure as prime minister. In 2004, after Gandhi declined the prime ministerial position and supported Singh instead, she first approached Yechury for support.

Yechury is survived by his wife Seema Chishti and their two children, Akhila and Danish. His elder son Ashish Yechury passed away due to Covid-19 in 2021. He was previously married to Indrani Mazumdar.

Legacy and Contributions

Sitaram Yechury made significant contributions to Indian politics through his leadership in CPI(M) and his role in coalition politics during the UPA government from 2004 to 2014. His ability to navigate complex political landscapes earned him respect across party lines.

The family has decided to donate Yechury's body to AIIMS for teaching and research purposes, continuing his legacy of contributing to society even after death.

Sitaram Yechury will be remembered for his dedication to public service and his efforts to bridge political divides. His passing marks the end of an era for Indian politics.
