Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (Feb 14) marked a key infrastructure milestone by landing at the Northeast's first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) built on a national highway in Assam's Moran.

The Prime Minister arrived aboard a C-130J aircraft and is set to witness an aerial display by the Indian Air Force, featuring multiple fighter jets, helicopters and transport planes.

Northeast's First Highway Airstrip

The newly developed Emergency Landing Facility has been constructed along the Moran bypass under the Dibrugarh-Moran National Highway project. Stretching about 4.2 kilometres, the facility is designed to serve as an alternate runway for emergency use.

The ELF is expected to support military operations, humanitarian missions and emergency situations where conventional airbases may not be accessible. Officials said its location holds strategic importance as the China border lies roughly 300 km away and the Myanmar border about 200 km from Moran.

What Makes This Facility Unique?

• The highway landing strip has been modelled on similar expressway airstrips built in other parts of India. It allows both civilian highway use and aircraft operations when required.

The project also improves road connectivity in the region, with the four-lane highway expected to ease travel for local residents.

Which Aircraft Did PM Modi Use?

The Prime Minister landed at the facility aboard a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. The military transport aircraft is manufactured by the American aerospace company Lockheed Martin and is widely used by air forces around the world, including India.

Known for its ability to land on short and semi-prepared runways, the C-130J is suited for tactical missions, disaster relief operations and troop transport, making it ideal for landing at highway-based airstrips like Moran.

Officials say the ELF strengthens defence preparedness in the Northeast while also showcasing India's expanding infrastructure. Trial runs for aircraft landings had been underway for days, drawing local crowds eager to witness fighter jets and transport planes operate from a highway.

The facility is expected to serve both strategic and emergency needs, while symbolising a growing focus on connectivity and defence readiness in the region.
