PM Modi Inaugurates 28th CSPOC, Addresses MPs on Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) at the iconic Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, bringing together parliamentary leaders from across the Commonwealth in a historic celebration of democratic dialogue. Addressing the gathering, which included Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and MPs from across India, Modi emphasised India's enduring democratic traditions and the role of legislatures in strengthening governance and citizen engagement.

In his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of dialogue among parliamentary institutions, both within India and across the Commonwealth. He urged members to share experiences, learn from global best practices, and collectively work to uphold the integrity, accountability, and transparency of democratic systems. Modi's address underscored India's vision of parliamentary diplomacy as a tool not only for cooperation but also for reinforcing democratic norms worldwide.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in his own remarks and social media posts, reflected on the significance of the event. He noted that #CSPOC2026 embodies India's rich parliamentary traditions, deep-rooted democratic ethos, and commitment to dialogue among Commonwealth legislatures. Birla's comments complemented the Prime Minister's message, highlighting the historic setting of Samvidhan Sadan as a symbol of India's constitutional journey and the global importance of parliamentary collaboration.

The inaugural session also saw participation from international leaders, including H.E. Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and H.E. Dr. Christopher Kalila, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). Their presence, alongside Speakers and Presiding Officers from multiple Commonwealth nations, reinforced the global scope of the conference and the shared commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy.

PM Modi's presence and address placed India at the centre of this historic gathering, showcasing the country's role as a custodian of democratic values and as a facilitator of international legislative dialogue.
