PM Modi Supports Electoral Bonds, Open to Enhancements for Transparency

New Delhi, Mar 31 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent interview with Thanthi TV, addressed the controversy surrounding electoral bonds, asserting that the system introduced by his government has enhanced transparency in political funding. Despite criticisms and legal challenges, Modi emphasized the importance of the electoral bond system in tracing the sources of political donations and their beneficiaries, a feat he claims was unachievable before his tenure began in 2014.

Modi's comments come against the backdrop of opposition parties leveraging a Supreme Court order that made all information related to electoral bonds public. This order highlighted concerns about anonymous donations, with critics pointing out that several purchasers of these bonds are firms under criminal investigation.
