PM Modi Creates History, Completes 8,931 Days As India’s Longest-Serving Head Of Government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has entered the record books as India's longest-serving head of an elected government, reaching a combined total of 8,931 days in office across his tenures as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister.

The achievement places him ahead of former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who had held the record with 8,930 days. With this latest milestone, Modi has now stepped into his 25th year in a continuous leadership role, marking one of the most significant stretches of uninterrupted political authority in India's democratic history.

Surpasses Pawan Kumar Chamling's Longstanding Record

The new benchmark is being viewed as a major political milestone, highlighting Narendra Modi's long and uninterrupted journey in public office.

By completing 8,931 days as head of government, he has edged past Pawan Kumar Chamling, the former Chief Minister of Sikkim, who had served for 8,930 days. The record reflects Modi's combined years at the state and national levels, underlining the scale and duration of his political leadership.

The moment is being seen as a rare feat in Indian politics, especially given the consistency with which he has remained at the top of the executive ladder over nearly 25 years.

From Gujarat Chief Minister To Three-Term Prime Minister

Narendra Modi first took charge as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, beginning a long stint in state politics that lasted until May 21, 2014. He remained in the post for more than 13 years, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister in Gujarat's history.

Soon after, he moved to the national stage and was sworn in as India's 14th Prime Minister on May 26, 2014.

His first term itself proved historic, as he became the first non-Congress leader to win a full majority in the Lok Sabha. He later went on to become the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and then return for a third straight term, after victories in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Apart from his political record, 2026 has also seen Modi cross major social media milestones that reinforce his global visibility.

Earlier this month, he touched 30 million subscribers on YouTube, extending his lead as one of the most-followed global leaders on the platform. He currently remains ahead of both serving and former heads of government in subscriber count.

In February, he also crossed 100 million followers on Instagram, becoming the first serving world leader and politician to achieve that mark. Since joining the platform in 2014, his account has grown steadily and is now among the most-followed political profiles globally. He currently has 101 million followers on Instagram.
