PM Modi Announces Bharat Ratna For Former PMs Rao, Charan Singh, And Swaminathan
The announcement of conferring the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour of the country, upon former Prime Ministers Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and agronomist MS Swaminathan was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.
This follows the recent announcement by the Centre of Bharat Ratna awards for former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur and BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani, bringing the total to 5 awards announced within a span of one month.

PV Narasimha Rao: Architect of Economic Reform
Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao, widely known as PV Narasimha Rao, served as India's ninth Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996. Born on June 28, 1921, Rao instigated significant economic reforms during his tenure, including liberalization and globalization measures that propelled India towards a market-oriented economy.
Despite facing political challenges, he dismantled the License Raj and initiated diplomatic overtures with neighboring countries. Rao's contributions to India's economic transformation and political landscape cemented his legacy as a reformer and statesman until his passing on December 23, 2004, as reported by Free Press Journal.

Chaudhary Charan Singh: Champion of Farmers' Rights
Chaudhary Charan Singh, born on December 23, 1902, was a distinguished Indian political leader who briefly served as the country's fifth Prime Minister from July 1979 to January 1980. Swaminathan's advocacy for sustainable farming methods has garnered international recognition, including prestigious accolades such as the World Food Prize and the Padma Vibhushan. His ongoing efforts inspire scientists and policymakers globally to tackle food security challenges and advance sustainable agriculture.
PM Modi announces Bharat Ratna Awardees
In the announcement for the Bharat Ratna to Chaudhary Charan Singh, it was stated by PM Modi, "It is the good fortune of our government that former Prime Minister of the country Chaudhary Charan Singh is being honored with Bharat Ratna. This honor is dedicated to his incomparable contribution to the country."
His entire life was dedicated to the rights and welfare of farmers. Whether as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh or the Home Minister of the country and even as an MLA, impetus was always given to nation-building. Firm stance against the Emergency was also taken by him. His dedication to our farmer brothers and sisters and his commitment to democracy during the Emergency are inspiring to the entire nation.
Former PM Narasimha Rao receiving the highest civilian honour was announced by PM Modi, who stated, "Delighted to share that our former Prime Minister, Shri PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna."
As a distinguished scholar and statesman, Narasimha Rao Garu served India extensively in various capacities. He is equally remembered for the work he did as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and as a Member of Parliament and Legislative Assembly for many years.
His visionary leadership was instrumental in making India economically advanced, laying a solid foundation for the country's prosperity and growth. Narasimha Rao Garu's tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant measures that opened India to global markets, fostering a new era of economic development.
Furthermore, his contributions to India's foreign policy, language, and education sectors underscore his multifaceted legacy as a leader who not only steered India through critical transformations but also enriched its cultural and intellectual heritage.
The honour for Dr. MS Swaminathan was announced by PM Modi, who stated, "It is a matter of immense joy that the Government of India is conferring the Bharat Ratna on Dr. MS Swaminathan Ji, in recognition of his monumental contributions to our nation in agriculture and farmers' welfare."
He played a pivotal role in helping India achieve self-reliance in agriculture during challenging times and made outstanding efforts towards modernizing Indian agriculture. We also recognise his invaluable work as an innovator and mentor and encouraging learning and research among several students.
"Dr. Swaminathan's visionary leadership has not only transformed Indian agriculture but also ensured the nation's food security and prosperity. He was someone I knew closely and l always valued his insights and inputs," wrote PM Modi.
