PM Modi, Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi To Meet Today, Churn On Next CEC's Name

A parliamentary panel, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has been scheduled to meet on Monday in New Delhi to finalise the name of the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Current CEC Rajiv Kumar will retire from his post on February 18.

According to the reports, the high-level meeting will be held at the PM House today, where all three prominent leaders will decide who will take charge of the constitutional body. Following the recommendation, The President will then officially appoint Nthe ext Chief Election Commissioner.

Who Will Be The Next Chief Election Commissioner?

Before the formation of the Parliamentary panel to pick the Chief Election Commissioner, the senior-most election commissioner was supposed to take charge as CEC, however, now
a search committee will shortlist five secretary-level officers for consideration of the Parliamentary panel.

Along with the chief election commissioner, PM-led committee will also stamp the name of one new election commissioner.

It is expected that Gyanesh Kumar is leading the race of ECE and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu is likely to be the new election commissioner, however, the official decision will be made only after churning on other officials' names and experience portfolios.

the "Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023" was introduced in the parliament last year.

Forthcoming Election:

In 2025, Bihar will go under polling, where Nitish Kumar-led BJP-JDU will face a challenge from Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD in alliance with Congress. The election will be held for 243 assembly seats, out of which, at least 122 will be required to claim a stake to form next government in the state.
