PM in Kerala on a 3-day visit, launches e-literacy drive (Pics)
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 4: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday evening for a three-day visit in the state,launched an e-literacy drive sponsored by the state government on Saturday.
Launching the total E-literacy Programme of Kerala Government being implemented under P N Panicker Vikas Vigyan Kendra at Thiruvananthapuram, Dr Singh said this was an initiative which could be taken across the country.
The state cabinet on Saturday conveyed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh its apprehensions over the Kasturirangan Committee report on Western Ghats conservation and asked the Centre to correct flaws in identification of Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESAs) through remote sensing method.
Manmohan Singh assured that no decision regarding the Western Ghats will be taken without consulting the state government.
The PM was received at the airport by Kerala Governor Nikhil Kumar, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Union Minister Shashi Tharoor and other state leaders.
On Sunday, Singh will take part in two different 90th birthday celebrations - one of leading media house Mathrubhumi and also of veteran Congress leader and former minister MM Jacob, after which he will return to Delhi.
