Planetary Parade 2025: Six Planets Align From January 21—Find Out Why This Happens And How To Watch

On the evening of January 21, a spectacular astronomical event will unfold in the sky. For the next few weeks, six planets in our solar system-Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus, and Saturn-will align in a straight line, creating a beautiful celestial "parade". This phenomenon, known as a planetary conjunction, occurs when several planets line up in a row in one part of the sky. While Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or telescopes to view, the other four planets can be seen with the naked eye.

This rare alignment will continue to be visible for the next few weeks, providing stargazers a chance to witness a truly remarkable event. If you are looking to spot it, mark your calendar for February 28, when seven-planet conjunction will occur, featuring Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Uranus, and Neptune all in a straight line. This is sure to be a mystical and awe-inspiring sight for observers around the world.

What Is A Planetary Conjunction?

A conjunction occurs when three or more planets align on the same side of the Sun. While it is not an everyday occurrence, planetary conjunctions do happen periodically, and they offer a wonderful opportunity for scientists and astronomy enthusiasts to observe the planets' movements.

The planets of our solar system revolve around the Sun at different speeds and distances. For example, Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, takes just 88 days to orbit, while Neptune, the farthest planet, takes about 165 Earth years. Each planet also has a slightly tilted axis, and they move in elliptical orbits, meaning their positions are constantly changing.

How Can You See The "Parade Of Planets"?

Though the planets may appear to be close to one another, there is actually a vast distance-millions or even billions of kilometres-between them. The alignment is a visual phenomenon that creates the illusion of proximity from our perspective on Earth.

Starting from January 19, the conjunction of Venus and Saturn will be visible, followed by the appearance of Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune on January 21. These planets will line up beautifully across the sky, continuing through to February 28.

What Does This Mean For Earth?

While this alignment is certainly fascinating, there is no cause for concern. In the past, similar alignments have occurred without causing any harm to Earth. Some people may spread false or misleading claims about planetary conjunctions, suggesting that they might cause problems on our planet, but these ideas are rooted in anti-science and misinformation. The truth is that planetary alignments are natural and harmless events, and they offer a chance for us to appreciate the wonders of the universe and deepen our understanding of astronomy.

So, rather than worrying, let's enjoy the view of these six (and later, seven) planets lining up in the sky and use this rare event as an opportunity to expand our knowledge of the cosmos.
