Pipe bomb used to trigger Bhopal-Ujjain train blast

The police is now checking if the bomb, which was made in Lucknow and later transported to Bhopal, was triggered using a timer.

The explosion on the Bhopal-Ujjain passenger train on Tuesday has been termed as an act of terror carried out by an Islamic State module in India. The bomb that was used in the blast which took place at the Jabri railway station in Madhya Pradesh injured nine persons. Investigations show that it was a pressure pipe bomb.

The bomb was planted at 8 am on Tuesday and the explosion took place an hour and forty-five minutes later. "We are checking if a timer was used to trigger the bomb," investigating officials said. The bomb was prepared in Lucknow and two persons left for Bhopal to plant it.

Officials say that the a thorough reconnaissance may have been carried out by the accused persons and after finding that security was lax in that particular area, they decided to plant the bomb. Officials also say that while the IS module may have carried out this blast, the pattern is very similar to the one adopted by the Indian Mujahideen.

The other factor that is being looked into is whether this explosion was part of a dry run since the bom was of low intensity. Or it could be the module trying to send a message to India.

Following the blast, an encounter broke out in the outskirts of Lucknow in which Saifullah, suspected to be involved in the train bombing was killed. The police have made several arrests. Those arrested are Danish Akthar, Syed Meer Hussain, Atish Muzzafar from MP, Mohammad Faisal Khan, Mohammad Imran and Fakre Alam from UP. Most of them are well-educated and are in the age group of 25 to 30 officials said.
