Pinaka: How India's Mythological Past Inspires Its Modern Military Arsenal
Blending ancient cultural symbolism with cutting-edge military technology, India's indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) is emerging as a key strategic asset in India's defence architecture. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Pinaka not only highlights India's growing defence capabilities but also uniquely reflects the nation's rich mythological heritage.
Named after Lord Shiva's legendary celestial bow-symbolising the power to vanquish evil with absolute precision-the Pinaka rocket system embodies a powerful fusion of India's traditional symbolism and contemporary military strength. In this modern iteration, the Pinaka system serves as a decisive battlefield asset, delivering devastating firepower accurately and swiftly.

A successful firing practice conducted at Pokharan Field Firing Ranges a few days ago has further validated Pinaka's operational capabilities, demonstrating India's readiness to deploy advanced indigenous firepower.
Another round of practice firing is scheduled in the coming weeks, underlining India's continued efforts to enhance its battlefield preparedness as tensions with Pakistan mount following the dastardly Pahalgam terror attacks, which bore clear fingerprints of the Pakistani military establishment.
Operationally, the Pinaka system demonstrates formidable capabilities. It can unleash a salvo of 72 rockets within just 44 seconds, deploying up to seven tonnes of explosive payload against enemy targets at ranges of up to 60 kilometres. Its advanced variant, the Pinaka Mk-II Extended Range (ER), extends this lethal reach further to 90 kilometres, while DRDO is actively working on even longer-range models, projected to achieve distances of 120, 150, and ultimately 200 kilometres.
Beyond mere destructive capability, Pinaka incorporates cutting-edge integrated GPS and inertial navigation technologies, ensuring precision strikes that greatly reduce the risk of collateral damage, aligning well with India's emphasis on responsible and strategic warfare.
Pinaka represents more than mere artillery. Produced indigenously by major Indian defence manufacturers-including Tata Advanced Systems and Larsen & Toubro-the system encapsulates India's ambitious defence manufacturing initiative under the banner of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. This strategic self-reliance allows India to produce over 5,000 Pinaka rockets annually, effectively supporting long-duration military operations without external dependence.
This indigenous achievement has begun resonating internationally, with exports to Armenia already confirmed and growing interest from countries such as France, marking India's emerging status as a reliable and credible defence exporter.
The Pinaka MBRL is more than just a rocket artillery system. It is an embodiment of India's strategic vision, harnessing deep cultural symbolism to assert India's modern defence posture. It is a clear indication of India's preparedness to leverage indigenous innovation for national security, marking a definitive shift towards self-reliance on the global defence stage.
