Petrol Is Cheaper Than Tomato In India: Check The Prices Of This Veggie In Leading States
Petrol has become cheaper than tomatoes in India. In most cities, the rate of this vegetable per kilogram has crossed Rs 100-mark.
Why Tomatoes Have Become Costly?
The current surge in prices can be attributed to the abrupt increase in temperature during March and April, which resulted in pest infestations that compelled numerous growers to abandon their crops.

Among the big states, the price of tomato (per kg) in Uttar Pradesh has touched Rs 150-mark. The price of vegetables has increased a lot. Tomatoes are being sold at Rs 150 per kg. Customers are facing a lot of problems due to the price hike. I request the government to intervene and regularise the vegetable prices, a customer told ANI.
The price of tomatoes (per kg) in West Bengal's capital Kolkata is over Rs 148 and in Purulia area it touched Rs 155.
In Delhi, the tomato was priced at Rs 129 per kg in the Safal store. "It is very difficult for the common man, we have stopped eating tomatoes. Tomatoes are being sold at Rs 129 per kg. The government should think about it", says a customer.
According to a report in India Today, local vendors are selling tomatoes in the range of Rs 120-140 per kg in the national capital.
Seeking to offset the soaring price of tomatoes, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday launched the sale of the precious commodity at Rs 60 a kilo at 82 fair price shops in the city.
"From today, tomato is being sold in ration shops at Rs 60/kg. It is available for Rs 100-130/kg in market. We are happy that Govt has started the sale at half the price. We thank our State govt for this good initiative," a customer told ANI.
A kg of tomato is over Rs 100-120 in Karnataka's capital Bengaluru.
"The price of tomatoes has increased everywhere. Petrol is cheaper than tomatoes now. It has become extremely difficult for us to manage expenses now," said a customer from Ranchi.
The price of tomatoes scaled a new high of Rs 160 per kg in retail markets across Mumbai on Tuesday. Vendors in Andheri Lokhandwala, Nerul in Navi Mumbai and Kalwa in Thane quoted Rs 120, per kilogram.
Also, the price of tomatoes has crossed Rs 150 per kg in some cities in Andhra.
It has to be noted that petrol is being sold in the range of Rs 96.72 (Delhi) to Rs 106.03 (Kolkata).
