Perihelion Day 2024: Earth's Closest Approach to the Sun!

Perihelion Day, observed today on January 3rd, holds significance as it marks the closest point of Earth to the sun in 2024. On this day, Earth is approximately 3 million miles nearer to the sun compared to its farthest point, known as the aphelion. The occurrence of Perihelion does not have a fixed date each year but generally takes place about two weeks after the winter solstice, the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere.

This phenomenon illustrates that Earth's orbit around the sun is not a perfect circle but rather an oval, adding an element of interest and dynamism to its journey through space. Presently, Earth is situated around 91.4 million miles from the sun. Research conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, indicates that sunlight during perihelion, the closest point to the Sun, is approximately 7% more intense compared to aphelion, the farthest point in its orbit.

Perihelion Day 2024: Earths Closest Approach to the Sun!

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, NWS Northern Indiana wrote, "It's #perihelion day! At this moment in time (6:38 PM CST/7:38 PM EST on January 2nd), we are at the point in Earth's orbit that is closest to the sun, which is about ~91 million miles away! As per Space.com, the term "perihelion" finds its origin in Greek, where "peri" denotes around, and "helios" refers to the sun. Whereas, on the other hand, "aphelion" signifies the point in an orbit when a celestial body is farthest from the sun. In the universe, natural bodies often deviate from perfect circles in their paths, adopting elliptical shapes. Various orbital shapes contribute to the diverse and dynamic nature of celestial paths in the cosmos, ranging from slightly elliptical orbits resembling somewhat squashed circles with low eccentricity to more flattened and highly eccentric paths.
