Bodoland Experiences Growth Following Peace Accord as PM Modi Advocates for Lasting Peace in Northeast

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Bodo community for choosing peace over violence following the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord. Speaking at the first Bodoland Mahotsav, he highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to ensure lasting peace in the Northeast. Modi noted that the accord has sparked growth in Bodoland, marking a significant shift towards development in the region.

Bodoland Growth and Lasting Peace Efforts

The prime minister emphasised that the Bodo Peace Accord has not only benefited the Bodo community but also paved the way for other agreements in the Northeast. He stressed that peaceful solutions are being sought for border disputes among northeastern states. "Results can never be achieved through bombs, guns or pistols and the Bodo community has shown the way," he stated.

Focus on Development and Prosperity

Modi highlighted that more than 10,000 youths in Assam have laid down arms due to the accord, returning to mainstream society. He expressed satisfaction with the development seen in Bodoland, noting that former militants are now excelling in sports. Kokrajhar has hosted two editions of the Durand Cup, with teams from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan participating.

The theme of the festival is "Peace and Harmony for Prosperous Bharat," focusing on the rich culture, language, and education of the Bodo community. Modi remarked on how decades of conflict had affected generations but now, with patience and cooperation, a new history is being written. "You have gathered here to celebrate the festival of a new future of peace, culture and prosperity," he said.

Infrastructure and Health Improvements

Modi pointed out that Assam's development under the BJP-led NDA government has been remarkable, especially in health infrastructure. The state has received four major hospitals recently: AIIMS Guwahati and medical colleges in Kokrajhar, Nalbari, and Nagaon. These facilities have significantly eased healthcare challenges for residents.

He also mentioned that a cancer hospital has been opened in Assam, providing much-needed relief to patients in the Northeast. The number of medical colleges in Assam has doubled from six to 12, with plans underway to establish 12 more. This expansion will create new opportunities for young people in the region.

Cultural Celebrations and Future Prospects

During his address, Modi recalled his visit to Kokrajhar after signing the Bodo Peace Accord in 2020. He spoke about feeling welcomed by the Bodo community and witnessing their commitment to peace and prosperity. "A new dawn of peace and prosperity in Bodoland after they chose the path of peace by giving up their arms," he recalled saying during his visit.

The Bodoland Territorial Region includes four districts: Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri. The Memorandum of Settlement signed in early 2020 aimed to enhance the powers of the Bodoland Territorial Council and address issues faced by Bodos outside their traditional areas. It also sought to protect their social, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic identities.

Modi concluded by highlighting mutual trust between people and government as key to development in Bodoland. He assured that both central and state governments are committed to leaving no stone unturned for progress in Bodoland. The event also featured a performance of Bodo folk dance Ranachandi by numerous artists.
