PDP Candidate Waheed Para Alleges Poll Manipulation in Jammu & Kashmir, Seeks Fair Elections
In a recent development from Jammu and Kashmir, Waheed Para, the Srinagar candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised serious allegations against certain officials within the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Para claims these officials are attempting to manipulate the Lok Sabha polls, drawing parallels to the controversial elections of 1987. The youth leader of PDP has voiced his concerns over what he perceives as actions influenced by a particular political party, undermining the democratic process.

Para, without pinpointing any individuals, expressed his apprehensions through a series of posts on X. He highlighted the adverse impact of arrests, harassment, and raids on PDP workers, suggesting these actions echo the electoral manipulation witnessed in 1987. "Dear @PMOIndia and @HMOIndia, actions of certain officials influenced by one political party are reminiscent of the mistakes made by the Congress and the National Conference in 1987," Para stated. He emphasized the need for free and fair elections, equating any form of manipulation with rigging that harks back to a darker period in Jammu and Kashmir's electoral history.
The 1987 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which Para references, are infamously regarded as rigged. The elections saw the Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference emerge victorious in a manner that many believed was unfair. This event is often cited as a catalyst for the rise of militancy in the region, marking a significant turning point in Kashmir's history.
Further intensifying his critique, Para revealed that police had arrested polling agents of the PDP. "Sad to see police arresting and unlawally detaining polling agents of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party in the central Kashmir parliament constituency," he lamented. This move by law enforcement agencies has added to the concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process in the region.
The allegations made by Waheed Para have brought to light concerns about democracy's health in Jammu and Kashmir. With historical references to past electoral malpractices, these claims underscore a deep-seated worry about repeating old mistakes that could potentially derail democratic processes. As these developments unfold, it remains to be seen how authorities will address these allegations to ensure a fair electoral process.
