PDP Will Aid Kashmiri Pandits in Their Return, Says Mehbooba Mufti
Addressing the concerns of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, on Sunday, extended an olive branch, promising support for their return and rehabilitation in the Kashmir Valley. This assurance came amidst her campaign for the Lok Sabha elections from the Anantnag-Rajouri seat. Highlighting the limitations of central government interventions, she emphasized the need for the community's initiative to facilitate their return.

Mehbooba Mufti, who has previously served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, underscored that political changes in Delhi, be it a shift from BJP to Congress, would not alter the ground realities for the Kashmiri Pandits. She stressed that the community's bold steps towards returning to their ancestral homes are crucial for their rehabilitation process. "You have to show boldness on your part for your return to your homes in the valley and we will also support you," she stated during a gathering.
The former chief minister also mentioned her discussions with Lt Governor Manoj Sinha regarding land allocation for the displaced community. She recalled her government's efforts in land demarcation aimed at facilitating the return of Kashmiri Pandits and expressed her desire to continue these efforts.
Addressing the challenges faced by employees serving in the valley, Mehbooba Mufti acknowledged the need for humanitarian considerations in transfer policies. She advocated for equal treatment and full benefits for employees recruited under the PM package, akin to other government employees.
Mehbooba Mufti further proposed the construction of residential quarters within temple complexes across the valley. This initiative aims to encourage Kashmiri Pandits to visit and spend time at these sites, thereby boosting their confidence in returning to their homeland.
She highlighted the historical coexistence of both communities in the valley, sharing moments of joy and sorrow. By urging the elderly among the Pandits to take a step towards returning home, she envisioned it as a catalyst for their community's broader rehabilitation.
The PDP leader criticized the central government's decision to reserve two Assembly seats for Kashmiri migrants, suggesting it favored individuals close to the BJP. She argued that reserving seats for the community within the valley would have been a more equitable approach.
Mehbooba Mufti also drew parallels between current electoral practices and those of 1987, accusing the BJP-led government of repeating past mistakes by roping in Jamaat-e-Islami JeI to contest assembly elections. She lamented that such tactics threaten national interest and undermine democratic principles.
In conclusion, Mehbooba Mufti's call to action for displaced Kashmiri Pandits reflects a blend of political advocacy and practical solutions aimed at healing old wounds. Her emphasis on community initiative, supported by policy changes and infrastructural development, presents a roadmap towards reconciliation and rehabilitation in Kashmir.
