Patna Freezes as Cold Wave Sweeps Bihar, Schools Shut Till Saturday
Patna and other parts of Bihar are in the grip of a cold wave, with temperatures dipping below 10 degrees Celsius. As a result, schools in Patna will remain closed till Saturday to ensure the safety of students.
The cold wave continues to sweep across Bihar, with the mercury level dipping below 10 degrees Celsius at 12 places in the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Wednesday. The IMD has issued an orange alert for several parts of the state, anticipating moderate to dense fog and cold day conditions in certain districts over the next two days.

Schools Closed in Patna
In view of the prevailing cold weather conditions, all schools in Patna will remain closed for students up to class 8 till Saturday, January 20, an official said. The decision aims to safeguard the health and well-being of students during the severe cold wave.
Forbesganj Records Lowest Temperature
Forbesganj in Araria district recorded the lowest temperature of 6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, making it the coldest place in the state. The IMD predicts that minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 6-11 degrees Celsius over the next three to four days in several parts of the state, including Patna. The state capital recorded a minimum temperature of 10.2 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 14.2 degrees Celsius during the day.
Other Cold Places in Bihar
Besides Forbesganj, other places in Bihar that experienced low temperatures on Wednesday include Gaya (6.7 degrees Celsius), Saran (7.3 degrees Celsius), Ziradei (7.4 degrees Celsius), Motihari (8.1 degrees Celsius), Buxar (8.4 degrees Celsius), and Kaimur (8.5 degrees Celsius). The minimum temperatures in Dehri, Kishanganj, Pusa, and Sharsha were above 9 degrees Celsius but below 10 degrees Celsius.
Foggy Conditions
The weather office reported low visibility due to fog in different parts of the state. The IMD has issued an orange alert, anticipating moderate to dense fog and cold day conditions in several districts, including Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Begusarai, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Buxar, Bhojpur, Siwan, East Champaran, and West Champaran, over the next two days.
Colour-Coded Weather Warnings
The meteorological department uses a four-colour code system for weather warnings: green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared), and red (take action). The orange alert indicates the need for preparedness for adverse weather conditions.
The ongoing cold wave in Bihar has prompted school closures in Patna and raised concerns about the health and safety of residents. The IMD's weather warnings and alerts help people stay informed and take necessary precautions during these challenging weather conditions.
