Passport Row Escalates: Himanta Biswa Sarma Flags ‘Manipulation’, Warns of Legal Action Against Congress

A political controversy intensified after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed allegations made by the Congress regarding his wife's citizenship and assets, calling them "fabricated" and "digitally manipulated."

In a post on X, Sarma highlighted what he described as multiple inconsistencies in documents circulated by the opposition. He pointed to discrepancies in names, nationality details, and identification numbers, arguing that the material lacked credibility.

Calling the claims a "poorly executed attempt at misinformation," Sarma said those responsible would be held accountable and warned of legal action against Congress leader Pawan Khera, who raised the allegations publicly.

War of Words Between BJP and Congress

The remarks came after Pawan Khera alleged at a press conference that Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, holds passports from multiple countries and that key financial details were not disclosed in official election filings.

Khera claimed to have documents supporting the allegations and urged the Election Commission to take action, including cancelling Sarma's nomination over alleged non-disclosure.

He further accused the Chief Minister and his family of being linked to various controversies, including property holdings abroad and financial irregularities.

Allegations Over Multiple Passports and Assets

According to Khera, Sarma's wife allegedly possesses passports from countries including the UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt. He also claimed she owns properties in Dubai and has business links in the United States.

The Congress leader questioned the transparency of these disclosures and raised political concerns over the claims.

Sarma Rejects Claims, Calls It 'Desperate Politics'

Responding strongly, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the allegations were baseless and politically motivated, accusing Congress of resorting to misinformation out of "frustration."

He asserted that such attacks reflect the opposition's weakening position and maintained that the people of Assam would not be misled by what he termed false narratives.

Sarma also indicated that both he and his wife would pursue legal action against those spreading the claims.

The exchange marks a sharp escalation in the political battle between the BJP and Congress, with both sides trading serious allegations as the state heads toward a crucial electoral phase.
