Parliament Standing Committee To Discuss UCC On July 3

A meeting to discuss the views of stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been called by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice.

A committee led by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi informed all the 31 MPs and members of the committee that their views on UCC would be sought and considered at the meeting on July 3, according to a report in ANI.

"Members are reminded that the next meeting of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice will be held at 03.00 PM on Monday, July 3, 2023," read a release on the committee's agenda.

The statement further stated, "To hear the views of representatives of the following organisations on public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023, inviting views from the various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code, under the subject 'Review of Personal Laws'."

At an event in Madhya Pradesh, the PM made a strong appeal for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and for the abolition of triple talaq, in the poll-bound state.

"If there is one law for one member in a house, another law for another, then how will such a house work with such dualities in law? Similarly, how will the country work? We have to remember that in the Constitution as well there is mention of uniform law for all citizens. The Supreme Court has time and again mentioned to implement the Uniform Civil Code, but those hungry for votebank oppose it," the Prime Minister said after flagging off five Vande Bharat trains.

However, the Opposition parties have slammed the Prime Minister, saying he should first talk about poverty, price rise and unemployment in the country.
