Jammu, May 4: Pakistani troops violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing on the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said Sunday.

"The Pakistani troops violated the bilateral ceasefire resorting to unprovoked firing at our positions on the LoC in Mendhar sector. The firing stated at 11.30 p.m. Saturday night," Defence spokesman Col. Manish Mehta told IANS.

The Indian Army also foiled an infiltration bid on the LoC in Poonch district

"The Pakistani trops used small arms and automatics in the firing. The Indian troops responded with equal calibre weapons," Mehta said.

Infiltration bid foiled

The Indian army Sunday foiled an infiltration bid on the LoC in the district.

The infiltration bid was second in less than two days on the LoC, an official said.

"A group of five to six militants tried to sneak into our side of the LoC in Dera Dabsi area in Poonch at night," a defence spokesman told IANS.

"Our troops fired at the infiltrators who had to withdraw back," he added.

"No casualty occurred on our side although the militants also fired at the Indian troops after being challenged."

He also said such infiltration bids are possible only with the assistance of the Pakistan army.
