While the death sentence awarded to former Indian naval officer, Kulbhushan Jadhav continues to be debated, official sources say that this may be part of a larger ploy. Pakistan may have taken this decision to get India to the talking table after one of their officers went missing.

Kulbhushan Jadhav

In Pakistan, the family of Lt. Colonel Muhammad Zahir told the media that they suspect that he was taken away by the Indian agencies. He had landed in Kathmandu, Nepal looking for a job last week and has been missing since.

India has repeatedly maintained that Jadhav was not a spy. India says that his arrest was wrong and the evidence mounted by Pakistan was false. Jadhav was a businessman after he quit the Indian Navy, officials have been maintaining.

Pakistan suspects that India was behind the disappearance of Zahir. The sentencing of Jadhav looks more like a pre-emptive measure by Pakistan. They feel that we may make revelations about Zahir and hence the sentencing of Jadhav is more of a pre-emptive move, a official said. However the official also added that India had nothing to do with the disappearance of Zahir.

Zahir had landed in Kathmandu on April 6 after he was called for an interview by a company. He had landed in Nepal and was received by a man called Javed Ansari. Since then he has gone missing, a FIR registered says. He retired from the Pakistan army in 2014 and since then has been looking for a job. Indian officials say that they have no idea about his whereabouts.
