52 year old Haque resides in a remote village, Dhalabari, in the Jalpaiguri District of North Bengal. A tea garden worker by profession, despite facing an economic crunch, Haque runs a free Bike-Ambulance service.

Till date he has ferried around 4000 villagers from Dhalabari and neighbouring villages to hospitals, free of cost. The nearest Hospital is 45 km away through rough terrain. Haque, popular is "Bike-Ambulance-Dada" was awarded the Padmashri this year for his selfless service.

On Saturday, Haque's daughter, Simu Begum was admitted at the Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital. She had suffered a miscarriage. Profusely bleeding she was immediately admitted at the CCU.

The Doctor had asked Haque to keep a unit of O+ve blood handy. He had gone to the blood bank and showed the donor's card. Haque had organized a blood donation camp on Friday in his locality. The blood bank staff informed Haque that O +ve blood was available.

"When the doctor confirmed the need for blood, I revisited the Blood Bank. The lady who was in the counted told me that there was no O +ve blood. She asked me to return with a donor. She even said that she could not confirm at what time blood would be available even after the donor would donate blood. I even wondered on the practicality of organizing blood donation camps when one does not get blood at the time of need. Not only that Tandra Dutta, the blood bank staff had jeered at me and behaved very rudely" alleged Haque.

On Sunday Rachna Bhagat, District Magistrate, Jalpaiguri ordered an inquiry into the matter. "I have spoken to Mr. Haque and am aware of the incident. A probe has been ordered and I have asked for details of the stock at the Blood Bank and where the units have been supplied" stated the DM.

Dr. Jagannath Sarkar, Chied Medical Officer of Health (CMOH,) claimed that the condition of Haque's daughter is stable and she was being taken care of. "However we could not save the foetus" stated the CMOH.

Ranjan Das, Sub Divisional Officer visited the Sadar Hospital on Sunday and spoke to the officials and staff. He stated that there is a shortage of blood. "We are contacting social organizations so that blood donation camps can be organized" added Rai.

The Hospital Super claimed that the Blood Stock Board had created the confusion.

"On Saturday there were 3 units of O +ve blood that was exhausted when Haque had visited the Blood Bank. The blood stock board had not been updated hence it created the confusion. We will get a digitized stock board which will be get updated automatically. We hope that the digitized board will help curb such confusions in future" stated Dr. Sushanta Rai, Superintendent, Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital.
