Overloading Leads to Technical Snag in Mumbai Monorail Train Operations Affecting Hundreds
A Mumbai Monorail train halted due to overcrowding, exceeding its weight limit. MMRDA reported that about 700 passengers were evacuated during the incident.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reported that a Monorail train in Mumbai stopped unexpectedly between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations. This was due to a technical issue caused by overcrowding. Approximately 500 passengers were rescued by the fire brigade using snorkel cranes. Another train, stuck near the Wadala bridge, was towed to the nearest station, and around 200 passengers were evacuated.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the overcrowding increased the train's weight to about 109 metric tonnes, exceeding its designed capacity of 104 tonnes. This excess weight disrupted the mechanical connection between the power rail and the current collector, interrupting the power supply needed for the train's operation. Technicians were dispatched promptly, and another Monorail train was sent to tow the stalled train as per standard procedure, but this attempt was unsuccessful.
Overcrowding Challenges
The MMRDA explained that normally, a stalled train would be towed to the nearest station. However, due to the excess weight from overcrowding, towing was not possible, necessitating a rescue operation with the Fire Brigade's assistance. The Harbour Line of the suburban railway was closed because of heavy rains, causing an unusual rush at Monorail stations. Despite security staff's repeated appeals, crowd control proved difficult.
The incident highlighted that Mumbai Monorail is a limited-capacity system not equipped to handle sudden increases in commuter demand like suburban trains or metro corridors. The closure of the Indian Railways Harbour Line due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai triggered this overcrowding. Security personnel made repeated efforts to manage boarding and prevent excessive crowding, but the surge in commuter numbers overwhelmed the system.
Technical Review Underway
A detailed technical review is being conducted to prevent such incidents from happening again. The MMRDA emphasised that overcrowding was the primary cause of this incident. The agency is working on measures to ensure better management of passenger flow during unexpected surges in demand.
The MMRDA statement further noted that despite efforts by security personnel to regulate boarding and manage crowding, they could not control the situation effectively. The agency is now focusing on improving its response strategies for similar situations in the future.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by transportation systems during unexpected events like heavy rainfall and service disruptions on other lines. The MMRDA is committed to enhancing its infrastructure and operational procedures to better handle such scenarios in future.
