Opinion: Andhra Pradesh Congress' Dire State Leading To Exodus?

United Andhra Pradesh, under the leadership of YS Rajshekhar Reddy was one of the most vital contributors to UPA in 2009. YSR being elected for a second term was seen as the Congress consolidating its position in the state, thereby giving rise to another bastion for decades to come. However, the unfortunate death of YSR left the party in shambles.

While the Telangana agitation ramping up, led by KCR, AP Congress faced the brunt for electing weak leadership, which according to some was intended to limit the emergence of strong regional leaders like Jagan Mohan Reddy.

AP Congress Dire Straits

The CMs that came after that could have negligible impact on the party's condition. Carving out a new state in Telangana added to the party's woes. KCR went onto cement himself as the one who eventually fulfilled the aspirations of the people of Telangana and Chandrababu Naidu reclaimed Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

By now, YSR's son Jagan Mohan Reddy's new outfit replaced the Congress party in the minds of voters. Despite multiple attempts by various APCC President's after that, the party failed to make any progress. The appointment of YSR's daughter YS Sharmila as the president in 2024 led to the hopes of dormant karyakartas and leaders rising again but in vain. The Congress party's disastrous performance in the recently concluded assembly elections despite the downfall of Jagan Mohan Reddy was the first nail in the coffin.

Sharmila was expected to ramp up operations and use the downfall of her brother as an opportunity to reclaim lost ground for the party. However, the lack of vision, drive and leadership has led to a hopeless situation. The APCC president's sporadic activity is being overpowered by her statements made during her brief stint as the chief of YSR Telangana party, an outfit she floated in Telangana after the rift between the brother-sister duo went public. Her public appearances and range of issues so far have been limited to aspects concerning a family feud or personal vendetta as some may call it, with little to no relevance in the larger context.

At this juncture, considering the uncertainty that looms over the future of the Congress party in the state, the bigger question is, has the time come for age-old loyalists of Congress, in other words, close confidants of YS Rajshekhar Reddy who dedicated most of their political careers to the party, to look for other alternatives? With a fully saturated alliance ruling the state at the moment, the most preferred entity could be YSRCP and this could also be the first step that Jagan Mohan Reddy and his party take towards reclaiming their fortress, Rayalaseema.
