India's recently launched Operation Sindoor, in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam, has become the centre of a growing political controversy following remarks by a senior defence official. Captain Shiv Kumar, India's Defence Attaché to Indonesia, revealed during a seminar that political constraints hindered the Indian Air Force from targeting Pakistani military installations and air defences during the operation's initial phase.

Captain Kumar's statement, made on June 10 at an Indonesian university, has prompted sharp criticism from opposition leaders, particularly the Congress party. His assertion that India suffered aircraft losses due to these political restrictions marks the first public attribution of operational setbacks to such constraints by a government representative.

Reacting strongly, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the BJP-led government of misleading the public and failing to be transparent about key aspects of Operation Sindoor. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh demanded to know why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not convened an all-party meeting or called for a special Parliament session to clarify the government's stance and decision-making process.

"This is not an isolated incident," Ramesh said, referring to previous revelations by the Chief of Defence Staff at a defence summit in Singapore. "Why is the government avoiding a national dialogue on matters of such strategic importance?"

Strategic and Political Fallout

Captain Kumar's remarks have opened a broader debate on the balance between military autonomy and political oversight in critical defence operations. According to his statement, the imposed constraints prevented the Indian Air Force from neutralising Pakistani air defences, leading to avoidable losses.
