D Raja Critiques One Nation, One Election Proposal as Impractical and Undermining Constitution

Communist Party of India general secretary D Raja criticised the 'one nation, one election' idea, calling it impractical for India. He argued that it undermines the Constitution. His comments came during the CPI's national executive meeting and the 100th birth anniversary commemoration of late CPI leader A B Bardhan. The BJP-led government recently accepted a panel's recommendation for simultaneous elections across various levels.

D Raja Calls One Nation, One Election Impractical

The CPI has consistently opposed this proposal, expressing concerns about its potential to lead to authoritarian rule. Raja stated, "They are undermining the Constitution under the so-called 'one nation, one election.' It is not practically possible in a country like ours." He reiterated that the CPI had communicated its opposition to the law commission.

Opposition to Simultaneous Elections

Raja emphasised India's diversity, suggesting that simultaneous elections could destabilise current arrangements and infringe on constitutional rights. He mentioned that when the Kovind committee sought political parties' views, he reiterated the CPI's stance against the proposal. The party believes such elections would harm democratic processes.

During the national executive committee meeting, discussions focused on India's political climate and strategies to counter right-wing policies represented by the BJP-RSS alliance. Raja highlighted the importance of strengthening the Left's influence in Indian politics, stating, "Future of India lies in the future of the Left."

Criticism of Government Policies

Raja criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government for continuing what he described as disastrous policies in its third term. He questioned Modi's claims about making India the world's third-largest economy, pointing out economic challenges. Raja remarked on Modi's focus on 2047 while ignoring 1947, noting that BJP's predecessors had no role in India's freedom movement.

The CPI leader acknowledged a gap between their political influence and electoral performance. Efforts are underway to involve more young people and women in the party and policy-making bodies. "We are striving to bridge the gender gap," he said, indicating a shift towards inclusivity within the party.

Political Alliances and Future Strategies

Raja expressed optimism about the INDIA bloc's prospects in Maharashtra elections. He urged NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress, Shiv Sena UBT to be more accommodating towards other parties. "I hope that Pawar will see that the Left parties will be accommodated in seat-sharing," he added.

When asked about seat allocation for Left parties, Raja avoided specifics but mentioned they aim for a reasonable presence in the assembly. This reflects their strategic approach towards forming alliances and ensuring representation in upcoming elections.

Raja also commented on Union minister Nitin Gadkari's respect for A B Bardhan, describing Gadkari as a sober and reasonable person among BJP leaders. However, he noted ideological differences due to Gadkari's association with RSS and right-wing ideology.
