Kamal Haasan Warns That One Nation, One Election Proposal Poses Risks to Democracy in India
Kamal Haasan, a prominent actor and leader of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), criticised the "one nation, one election" proposal. He argued that such a system is flawed and unnecessary for India. Haasan warned that if simultaneous elections had occurred in 2014 or 2015, it could have led to authoritarian rule and suppression of free speech.

Haasan compared the idea to a hypothetical situation where all traffic lights turn the same colour simultaneously, suggesting it would cause chaos. He emphasised the importance of allowing people time to think and make informed choices. Although he mentioned Europe and Russia, he did not specify any country where simultaneous elections had failed.
Political Journey and Challenges
Haasan shared his journey into politics, despite advice against it. He also faced criticism for hosting the Bigg Boss show. He stated that engaging with people through various platforms is part of his life, not an addiction. Since childhood, he has been in the limelight as an actor.
Reflecting on his political career, Haasan acknowledged his electoral defeat but stressed that failure is not permanent. In the 2021 Assembly election, he lost to Vanathi Srinivasan of the BJP from Coimbatore South constituency. He noted that even political positions like prime minister are not permanent.
Concerns Over Parliamentary Representation
Haasan expressed concern over potential changes in Tamil Nadu's parliamentary representation due to delimitation proposals. Tamil Nadu currently has 39 Lok Sabha seats. He argued against reducing seats based on population control achievements, highlighting the state's adherence to national population policies.
He criticised the idea of reallocating seats based on population size, suggesting it would unfairly benefit states like Uttar Pradesh with larger populations. Haasan emphasised that tax revenue should be distributed equitably across the country.
MNM's Political Alliances and Future Plans
The MNM has aligned with the DMK for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The DMK has promised a Rajya Sabha seat to Haasan's party in 2025. During MNM's second general body meeting, Haasan was re-elected as party chief. DMK president M K Stalin congratulated him on his re-election and praised his rationalist views.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also extended their congratulations. Founded in 2018, MNM is gearing up for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, with Haasan urging party workers to prepare diligently.
