OMG: Baby within a Baby! Dead foetus found inside a 4-year-old boy

Midnapore, Oct 6: A 4-year-old boy underwent a critical operation as he was diagnosed with one rare of rarest cases in the country. A dead foetus was found inside his abdomen.

Doctors claimed that such rare medical abnormality is known as "foetus in foetu" (baby within a baby). Such cases are rare as it occurred once in every five to six lakh people.

The 4-year-old boy hails from a village of West Midnapore district, West Bengal. He was admitted to hospital as he complained about severe stomach pain.

Initially, doctors suspected that it might be a case of tumour. However, when Dr Sirshendu Giri sent the boy for ultrasonography and CT scan, he was shocked.

It was a dead embryo inside the boy's abdomen which was causing the severe pain. After the operation, doctors removed the foetus which had hands, legs, nails and partially formed head.

Condition of the boy was stable and he was under observation, informed the doctors who treated him.

This phenomenon occurs during early pregnancy when one twin enters into the other through the umbilical cord and becomes something like a parasite to the host baby. After birth, it becomes an abdominal mass, the doctor said.
