Omar Abdullah Slams Proposed Amendments To J&K Reorganisation Act

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah voiced his objections to the governments amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, citing the pending Supreme Court case and concerns over the nomination of assembly seats.

National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah expressed his disapproval of the government's proposed amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, citing the ongoing adjudication of the law in the Supreme Court.

NC's Objections to the Bill

Abdullah highlighted two primary objections to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Amendment Bill. Firstly, he pointed out that the Supreme Court has yet to deliver its verdict on the reorganisation, and the government is making continuous changes to the law. Secondly, he raised concerns about the provision for nominating members to the legislative assembly, arguing that this should be the prerogative of an elected government.

Concerns about BJP's Intentions

Abdullah expressed skepticism about the motives behind the nomination provision, suggesting that it may be an attempt by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to increase its presence in the assembly due to its inability to win elections. He stated that if the changes are not reversed, the elected government formed after assembly elections in J-K may take action to rectify the situation.

NC and PDP's Legal Strategies

When asked about the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) intention to approach the court over the amendment bill, Abdullah clarified that the NC has already challenged the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act in the Supreme Court. He noted that the PDP did not join the NC's legal challenge when it was filed in response to the decisions of August 5, 2019.

Collaboration for a Bigger Cause

Addressing the separate party functions conducted by the NC and PDP, Abdullah emphasized that both parties have come together for a larger cause. He explained that while they may have different ideologies, they are united in their opposition to the events of August 5 and the perceived betrayal of J-K's rights. Abdullah highlighted their joint efforts to find a solution to these issues.

Preparing for Future Elections

Abdullah mentioned that the party workers conventions aim to engage with the people and strengthen the party in preparation for upcoming elections. He acknowledged the importance of these elections and expressed confidence in the party's ability to field strong candidates, including the possibility of his father, Farooq Abdullah, contesting from the Srinagar constituency.

Fighting for J&K's Rights

Abdullah reiterated the NC's commitment to fighting for the restoration of J-K's democratic rights. He emphasized that his personal ambitions do not extend to seeking positions of power, but rather to addressing larger issues such as restoring dignity, protecting J-K's unique identity, and securing democratic rights.

Questioning BJP's Development Claims

Abdullah challenged the BJP's claims of development after the revocation of Article 370, questioning the lack of visible improvements in areas such as healthcare, education, and industry. He expressed skepticism about the fulfillment of these promises and criticized the BJP government for plunging the people of J-K into a state of hopelessness.
