Omar Abdullah Elected As National Conference Leader: A New Era For J&K Politics
Omar Abdullah, vice president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), has been elected leader of the party's legislature wing following a unanimous decision by newly elected JKNC Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
Party president and Omar's father, Farooq Abdullah, announced the decision on Thursday, expressing confidence in his son's leadership.

Omar Abdullah Elected As National Conference Leader
Omar, who previously served as chief minister from 2009 to 2015, is poised to lead the government in the newly formed legislative assembly. The National Conference's legislative meeting, held at the party headquarters, concluded with Omar being chosen as the leader without opposition.
According to Farooq Abdullah, the decision reflects widespread support for Omar within the party. "A meeting was held where everyone unanimously chose Omar Abdullah as their leader," he told reporters. As the government formation process gains momentum, the National Conference, in alliance with Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), and the Panthers Party, has scheduled a meeting to discuss the next steps.
Omar Abdullah thanked the MLAs for their support and affirmed that discussions with Congress are progressing well. Four independent MLAs have also pledged their support, adding to the party's existing 42-seat count. Once the official letter of support from Congress is secured, the alliance is set to visit the Raj Bhavan to stake their claim to form the government.
In the recent assembly elections, the National Conference won 42 seats, while the Congress and CPI(M) secured six and one seat, respectively, under the alliance banner. Omar Abdullah won both seats he contested, demonstrating strong voter confidence in his leadership. With 29 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the second-largest party in the 90-member legislative assembly.
